Vocabulary Showcase: “Doctor”

Welcome to the Vocabulary Showcase! This week we are looking at different kinds of doctors. This can be very useful to know when you need medical help in an English-speaking country.

• General Practitioner (UK), Family Doctor (USA) – Doctor you see for general problems. This doctor can send you to a specialist if you need more help.

• Gynaecologist – Doctor for female (vaginal) health problems and checks (males see a Urologist).

• Paediatrician – Doctor for children.

• Surgeon – Doctor who does surgery in an operating theatre when you need an operation.

• Oncologist – Doctor for cancer.

• Anaesthetist – Doctor who puts you to sleep when you have an operation.

I hope you are all happy and healthy, but it is always good to know the names of different types of doctors. You can never be too prepared!
